Plot (spoilers: moderate)
A boarding duel around the Furious Abyss — an Abyss-class super-battleship secretly built by the Mechanicum for the Word Bearers and sent to strike Macragge at the same time as Calth. The ship is run down and sunk on the approach to Macragge. Tactically it explains why Ultramar did not die from a single shot by the fleet. In literary terms it is weaker than the neighbouring volumes; as a layer of the map it is useful.
Events in the book
- Battle of the Furious Abyss Pyrrhic loyalist victory
