Tallarn: The Iron Tomb
The virus, the tanks, Perturabo — how the desert strikes a world off the roll of the living and yields no victory.
A World That Ceases to Be a Biosphere
The Iron Warriors’ viral bombardment burns out Tallarn’s biosphere: the planet becomes an uninhabitable desert, and the survivors live in sealed machines and bunkers. This is not a “siege of a city”, it is a change of environment.
The world’s status on the map is a dead zone, although the war is still going on. Compare with Isstvan III: the instrument is the same, the target different — there it was one’s own companies, here the world as such.
The Largest Tank Battle, Which Decides Almost Nothing for Sol
The number of machines is monstrous: over a million armoured units, the largest tank engagement in Imperial history.
Perturabo did not come for the world. Beneath the sands lies the Black Oculus, also the Cursus of Alganar — a portal through which the Iron Warriors could have struck a bargain with daemons. This is not a “secret of the Father”, like the gate of Molech: Perturabo learned of the find only on the spot, the planned “strike and grab” raid grew into a protracted slaughter, and the Oculus itself was buried in the course of the fighting.
The loyalists hold, the IV leaves without a prize. For Horus’s path to Terra, Tallarn is the expenditure of a flank, not a key. For the IV it is one more siege in which the genius for breaking a world does not bring the love of the Father.
How to Read a Desert on the Star Map
One system, high intensity, few routes onward. Do not expect an arrow from Tallarn to Terra.
The package: Molech (the gate) → Tallarn (the tomb) → Beta-Garmon (the road). Book: Tallarn (J. French). Spoilers medium relative to the Siege. The date is disputed: the infobox gives 010–011.M31 (bombardment 326.010.M31, withdrawal 408.011.M31), some compilations stretch it to 012.M31.
What to remember
- The environment is destroyed, the war goes on inside machines.
- For Sol it is a flank; for the IV it is a portrait of the primarch.
- Molech’s neighbour on the timeline, but not in the nature of its gate.
How to look in the atlas
- 010.M31, the “Tallarn” system, the “World statuses” layer switched on.
- The dossiers of the IV and Perturabo; open the VII and Dorn alongside — there is no comparison mode, so read the dossiers one after another.
- Do not look for a Tallarn → Terra route: it does not exist as a “key”.
Disputed in the canon
- The dating of Tallarn is disputed: the Lexicanum infobox gives 010–011.M31 (viral bombardment 326.010.M31, withdrawal 408.011.M31), while the Fandom chronicle stretches the campaign to 012.M31. The atlas places the battle at 010.M31 by the start of the bombardment and keeps it as a war extended in time, not as a single day.
