The Schism of Mars

Who forges the war: the Omnissiah of Terra against the Omnissiah of Horus. 005–006.M31, the “Death of Innocence”.

The Pact That Cracked

Mars is not a “province” of the Imperium: it is an allied cult of the Machine-God, which recognised the Emperor as the Omnissiah in exchange for a monopoly on knowledge. The Great Crusade eats shells, Titans, ships — all of it comes from the Red Planet and its forges. Horus strikes not only at the Legions. He strikes at the pact.

The mechanics of the deal are concrete in the canon. Through his agent, the adept Regulus, Horus gives Fabricator General Kelbor-Hal the means to open the Vaults of Moravec — forbidden knowledge, including warp technology. From there corrupted scrapcode spreads through Mars’s digital network, and this is no longer a mutiny but a contagion. The pretext was given to Kelbor-Hal by the loyal side: the techno-magos Koriel Zeth, mistress of the forge of Magma City, declared that she no longer believed in the existence of the Machine-God while remaining loyal to the Emperor. The schism received the name “Death of Innocence”.

005–006.M31 run parallel to Isstvan III: while Garro flies, Mars is already shooting at itself. On the map Mars in Segmentum Solar is not the backdrop of Terra but the system’s second pole. Whoever holds Mars feeds the siege. Whoever loses it will be counting shells in 014. The novel “Mechanicum” provides the faces (Zeth, Kane, Land, Chrom); the Black Books provide the Legios. The Imperial Truth on Mars was thin anyway: they had always prayed. Horus did not convert atheists. He redirected a prayer.

Titans, Magma City, Phobos

The schism is not a single explosion. It is a war of forges, Legios, knights and skitarii across the surface and the moons. Magma City ends with Koriel Zeth detonating the reactors — not with a “lava cascade”: that version cannot be verified, and the atlas keeps it in the background. The Phobos Raid runs in the opposite direction from what its name suggests: it is the loyalists who storm the moon. Phobos’s automatic batteries burned most of the ships, but the skitarii of the conclave Incursus-Lambda-Psi landed about three thousand combat pilgrims, took Auxiliary Gate 14 and carried the sarcophagus of the First Fabricator General out of the underground vaults.

Legio Mortis leans towards Horus along with Kelbor-Hal — Mars is its home, and the political bet is made at home; other Legios split more painfully. The Schism of Mars (005.M31), Magma City (006.M31), the Defence of Ryza (010.M31) are a dense flare and its echo in Solar, which are easy to miss while looking at Isstvan. Do not miss them.

Dorn gets a wounded Mars at his back for all the remaining years: even the “loyal” Mechanicum after the schism is Kane, not a calm assembly line. From 006 the Dark Mechanicum supplies the traitors with daemon-engines and siege train. If in a faction card you see a “dark” forge on Horus’s path, it is the fruit of this schism, not a sudden heresy of the year 013. It is disputed how thoroughly “all of Mars” fell: the canon provides loyal enclaves, refugees, and later the Liberation of Mars (015.M31). The atlas does not paint the planet one colour for ever.

What This Means for the Palace

A Siege without a traitor Mars would be a Siege without some of the Titans of Mortis, without some of the orbital hell, without gifts of plague engineering. A Siege without a loyal shard of the Mechanicum would be a Siege without repair of the walls and without the Adeptus Mechanicus, which is formally born later — in 012.M31.

Dorn fights already knowing that the system’s forge is unreliable. Hence the value of Ryza and the other loyal forge worlds — and their own battles (the Defence of Ryza, 010.M31). On the galactic map Mars is close to Terra geometrically and far politically after 005. When reading the Siege, keep Mars at the periphery of your vision, and not only the Palace.

The Solar War includes the fall of moons and spheres; Mars is a separate abscess that was not “closed” until the Scouring. If you read only the Astartes, the Schism seems a side matter. If you read tonnage, it equals Isstvan in its influence on the possibility of a long war. The lodges and the anathame give Horus Legions. Kelbor-Hal gives him factories.

The Dark Mechanicum as a Side, Not as a “Bad Combustion Engine”

After the schism the Dark Mechanicum is an independent faction with a theology: the warp as one more machine spirit, prohibition as an insult to the Omnissiah. The daemon-engines of the Word Bearers are the work of such forges; in the canon they have both a name and a face: the blood coven Anakatis Kul. Perturabo speaks to them in the language of siege better than Fulgrim does.

On the map their supply routes matter more than one more company of the III. Do not mix terminology: the Mechanicum, the Dark Mechanicum and the Omnissiah are three different things, and confusion here breaks the reading of Segmentum Solar. Do not call all the traitor techies “Iron Warriors”. Do not call Mortis a “Legion of the Astartes”. The Collegia Titanica is a different arm of service, and the Schism cuts it in half.

The atlas’s strength comparisons do not show this arm — they are about the Astartes, and this is honestly recorded in the notes. For Mars, look at factions and events, not at the Legion columns. The VII nowhere “holds Mars”; the Fists hold Terra while the Red Planet eats itself. Hence the rule: when opening Beta-Garmon or the walls, check the factions of Titans and forges, not only the Legion numerals. Otherwise the siege again turns into a duel of primarchs without shells.

How to Fit Mars into the Galactic War

The pack: Mars in 005.M31, with Isstvan III beside it — two fires of a single week of the era. Then Magma City (006.M31), then the quiet years of the abscess, then the birth of the Adeptus Mechanicus (012.M31), then the Siege, then the Liberation (015.M31). The book “Mechanicum” is mandatory; after that, the cards of Kelbor-Hal, Kane, Zeth and the factions.

Do not expect a primarch at every Martian event: this is a war of the magi. The disputed details of the inner temples and of the “dragon” in “Mechanicum” we do not bring onto the map as a separate canon fact without a note of the novel. The atlas anchors what agrees: the schism, the sides, the link with Horus, the influence on Sol.

If this article seems shorter than the Isstvan ones, it is so by the number of Astartes and not so by the number of shells. A reader who “does not like the Mechanicum” still eats its fruits at Beta-Garmon and at the walls. The final linkage: Isstvan gives Horus Legions, Mars gives factories, Davin gives the right to command. Take out Mars — and the Siege loses Mortis and part of the siege train.

What to remember

  • The schism runs parallel to Isstvan III and strikes at the forge’s pact, not at “one more Legion”.
  • The mechanics of the deal: the agent Regulus, the Vaults of Moravec, scrapcode; the pretext was Koriel Zeth’s renunciation of the Machine-God.
  • Whoever holds Mars feeds the siege; Dorn has been deprived of it since 005.
  • The Dark Mechanicum is theology and supply, not a synonym for the Iron Warriors.
  • The Liberation of 015.M31 is the end of the abscess, not a denial of its role in 014.
How to look in the atlas
  • “Mars” and “Isstvan” at 005.M31 — two frames of one era; the system search finds both.
  • “Legions” tab → “Forces and powers”: Legio Mortis against the loyalist Legios and the Dark Mechanicum as a separate faction — the Astartes numerals do not describe this theatre.
  • Step through the chain of cards 005 → 006 → 010 → 012 → 015.M31: the schism as a process, not a flash.
  • Read “Liberation of Mars” as a bracket, not as “Mars was always loyal”.

Disputed in the canon

  • Dates: the atlas places the Schism of Mars at 005.M31 as an exact date, whereas in the sources the schism is stretched over 005–006.M31 and the blockade of Mars lasted until the Solar War.
  • The death of Koriel Zeth: the canon gives the detonation of the reactors; the popular version about a “lava cascade” cannot be verified, and the atlas keeps it in the background.
  • How thoroughly “all of Mars” fell is disputed: the canon gives loyal enclaves and refugees, and, in 015.M31, the Liberation.
  • The motif of the “dragon” from the novel “Mechanicum” remains a bookish one and is not brought onto the map as a separate canon fact.
