Luther

Luther — a Knight of Caliban, mentor and closest friend of Lion El’Jonson, who united Caliban together with him. Passed over for glory and left to rule his home world while the Legion was at war, he succumbed to envy and dark forces. His rebellion split Caliban soon after the Heresy and gave birth to the “Fallen Angels” — the eternal secret shame of the Dark Angels.

Fate

Fell after the Heresy: consumed by resentment and the whispering of the warp, he raised a rebellion on Caliban and gravely wounded the returned Lion in a duel. The planet was swallowed by a warp storm, giving rise to the “Fallen”, and the broken Luther was imprisoned in the Tower of Angels for ten thousand years.

Disputed in the canon

  • Luther’s treachery is post-Heresy: the rebellion on Caliban and the duel with the Lion fall in 015.M31 (the Destruction of Caliban), that is, already after the Great Scouring. In the chronicle of the Heresy he is listed as a loyalist of the I Legion right to the end; “traitor” here is his final allegiance, not a position held across the whole map.

Relations

  • Lion El’Jonson — Lutherbetrayal

Caliban Divided. Luther is the Lion’s foster father, left behind on Caliban. Over the years of the Heresy he raises half the Legion against the primarch. The destruction of Caliban at the beginning of the Scouring is the Dark Angels’ own domestic civil war, not part of Horus’s plan.

Event: Destruction of Caliban · 015.M31 · Pyrrhic loyalist victory
