Battle of Sarosh

Place: Sarosh · Great Crusade frontier

Fig. 1 · Place on the map

Loyalist victory The Dark Angels foil an attempt on the Lion’s life and banish the summoned daemon; the Sarosh revolt is crushed.

Sarosh — “Four-Three” in the Dark Angels’ reckoning — had survived the Long Night with its technology intact and at first seemed to accept the Imperial Truth. The Twenty-Second Company of the I Legion and the 4th Expeditionary Fleet pursued the Compliance listlessly, until it emerged that the Saroshi had merely feigned submission and had tried to kill the Imperial envoys, including the primarch Lion El’Jonson, with an atomic charge. At the same time a secret Chaos cult set about summoning a daemon into the material world, but the Dark Angels disrupted the ritual and destroyed the creature. Titans of the “Fire Wasps” Legio and regiments of the Imperial Army finished off the last of the revolt.

Significance

One of the first appearances of Chaos in the chronicle of the Crusade and an early shadow of discord between the Lion and Luther.

Disputed in the canon

  • A pre-Heresy chronicle of the Great Crusade — the climax of the novel “Descent of Angels”; the exact Imperial year is not named in the canon, and the event is placed in the late M30. The segmentum of the world of Sarosh is not established in the sources.
