Molech: The Gate of the Father and the Son
The year 009.M31, House Devine, a bargain after which Horus goes to Sol no longer as a general.
009, Not 010: Where the Seam Came From
There is no dispute over the year. The FW Black Book VI: Retribution timeline and the official Heresy timeline give 009.M31, as do Lexicanum and Fandom; we know of no explicit year in “Adeptus Titanicus: Doom of Molech”. The event card names them in the canon note.
“010” is not a date: “009–010.M31” in Lexicanum’s battle list is the list’s range. No publication giving 010.M31 has been found, and the atlas shows the date without a dispute mark.
A Knight House as the Key, Not an Extra
Molech is a world of knights (a Knight World), ruled since the time of the Emperor’s own expedition by House Devine; the Emperor left a serious garrison there. This is not a feudal world in general but specifically a Questoris domain, and the difference determines the mechanics of the fall.
Part of the house opens to Horus what the Emperor once closed: House Devine is the first of the Knight Houses to go over to Chaos, having fallen under the influence of Slaanesh, and its betrayal proves to be the turning point of the battle. Worlds with knights read differently from garrisons: they surrender by oath, not by headcount. Compare with Tallarn: there the iron of the desert and the Titans, here the gate and the betrayal of a court.
What Lies Beyond the Gate and Why the Father Needs It
“Vengeful Spirit” describes a place of power — a warp gate beneath a city named in honour of Horus, through which the Emperor once took what made the Webway and the primarchs possible. Horus enters as a commander and emerges as a bearer.
The atlas does not illustrate the warp from inside: there are no honest pictures. It records the consequence on the scale — after Molech the Warmaster goes through Beta-Garmon to Sol, and the final duel becomes possible in the form in which it will occur. To read Molech as “one more victory for the XVI” is to miss a change in the nature of the war.
The Pack: Molech → Tallarn → Beta-Garmon
Three theatres of a single road. Molech is a secret. Tallarn is scorched armour (Perturabo, the virus, tanks). Beta-Garmon is the meat of Titans before the gates of Sol.
Do not stand on a single star. The order matters more than any one date: gate, desert, cluster, Sol.
What to remember
- The date is not “unknown”: FW Black Book VI and the reference works give 009.M31; “010” is a list range, not a date.
- Molech is a world of knights, and House Devine explains how such worlds fall.
- After Molech Horus is not only the commander of a coalition.
How to look in the atlas
- The card “Battle of Molech”: the date and the canon note — the sources for the year are named there.
- “Legions” mode → “Forces and powers” tab → “House Devine”. Then the “Molech” chronicle.
- Straight on to Tallarn (010.M31) and Beta-Garmon (013.M31).
- Compare the sides of Molech and Tallarn: oath against headcount.
