Retaking the Lion’s Gate spaceport for the landing of Guilliman’s reinforcements, Jaghatai Khan met the daemon primarch Mortarion. Mortarion broke the Khan’s arms and ankles and smashed his face to a bloody pulp, but the Khan rose, goaded his brother with taunts into a fatal mistake and let himself be pierced by the scythe — so that, pulling himself up along the blade, he could behead Mortarion and banish him into the immaterium with a vortex blast. Gravely mauled, the Khan collapsed, and the White Scars, maddened with fury, swept the stunned Death Guard out of the spaceport; the almost lifeless primarch was found by Ilya Ravallion and Jangsai Khan.
Outcome The Khan beheads Mortarion and banishes him into the warp, but is himself gravely wounded.

Disputed in the canon
- The novel “Warhawk” (C. Wraight), 014.M31. Mortarion is not killed for good — as a daemon primarch he is banished into the warp. The Khan survived the clash: he, almost lifeless, was carried out by Ilya Ravallion and Jangsai Khan; the further fate of the Khan himself is left unclear in canon (in the 41st millennium he is listed as missing, not fallen).
