Thramas: A Hunt in the Night
The Lion against Curze: the war that steals the I Legion from the Siege
On the cover: I Dark Angels
Thramas cannot be won in a general engagement. Curze knows this. The Lion takes too long to learn — and that is the whole of Horus’s design.
Step 1 of 4 ·
The sector as a trap
The Eastern Fringe. Few anchor stars, a great deal of emptiness in which the VIII dissolves.
On the galactic map Thramas looks like an edge — and that is the point. Horus sent Curze to the Eastern Fringe precisely in order to bleed the Dark Angels and keep the Lion from reaching Terra. The campaign of terror across the worlds of Geldar and Thramas drags on for almost three years and along the way splinters the Night Lords themselves as a single force. Distance here is the weapon: the Lion cannot abandon the sector, and he certainly cannot finish it quickly.
Event: Thramas Crusade · System: Thramas Sector
How to look in the atlas
- Zoom out the “Map” and find Thramas relative to Terra; switch on the “Region names” layer.
- The date-confidence tag is “disputed”: 007–009.M31 per Lexicanum, with some materials stretching the tail to 010.
Disputed in the canon
- What is disputed is not the point but the extent of the Thramas Crusade: Lexicanum gives 007–009.M31 and the formula “almost three years”, while some materials stretch the tail of the campaign to 010.M31 (via Sotha). The atlas places the step at 007.M31, by the start of the campaign: it is Curze’s entry into the Eastern Fringe that is dated, not the end of the war.

Step 2 of 4 ·
Sevatar
The First Captain of the VIII holds the Legion together while the primarch retreats into nightmare.
On Thramas itself he is taken prisoner by the Dark Angels during negotiations; the place and circumstances of his death are not directly named in the primary sources, and wordings such as “died at the Siege of Terra” are the guesses of compilers, not the testimony of the novels.
System: Thramas Sector
How to look in the atlas
- The “Legions” mode → VIII → the “Notable warriors” block: Sevatar is there.
- Compare Sigismund of the VII: two First Captains, two different wars.

Step 3 of 4 ·
Tsagualsa: brothers in the dark
A personal meeting yields no staff-level solution. Both remain themselves.
Curze summoned the Lion to talks; the conversation broke down, and the primarchs came to blows in single combat until their warriors dragged them apart, both gravely wounded. At that same hour the Dark Angels smashed the Night Lords’ fleet in a carefully planned ambush — this is the culmination of the Crusade. But the war does not end “the Isstvan way”: there is no one to land a second wave and finish the job. Curze withdraws, to be tried later on Macragge, while the I Legion’s years have already been spent.
Event: Tsagualsa Incident · System: Thramas Sector · Duel: Lion El’Jonson against Konrad Curze
How to look in the atlas
- The duel card “The Lion against Curze” and the event card — read them together: the personal and the staff-level diverged.
- Then 10.18, the trial of Curze on Macragge — another scene of the same man.
Canon note
- Tsagualsa is the culmination of the campaign: the Dark Angels broke the VIII’s fleet in a prepared ambush; what remained unclosed was not the front but Curze himself.

Step 4 of 4 ·
The price for the Siege
The primarch of the I is not at the walls. But it does not look like an empty cell of the inventory.
A closing of the circle with the investigation of the absent. Thramas explains the most galling line of 014: the Lion is not at Terra. But ten thousand Dark Angels of Captain-Paladin Corswain land at the Astronomican during the Siege and fight Typhus’s Death Guard to relight the beacon for Guilliman’s navigation. The Legion is present on Terra; what is absent is the primarch, and the Legion in its entirety. The name of the Lion’s Gate has nothing to do with Lion El’Jonson — a coincidence of the map, not etymology, though it reads as irony.
Event: The Siege of Terra · System: Terra
How to look in the atlas
- Slider at 14.00, the “Loyalists” rail — the Lion is not among the commanders.
- Then 14.48: Corswain’s card, with the I in the loyalist column.
- Return to the investigation “Who Did Not Come to the Walls” — this step is its first amendment.
Canon note
- The I Legion was on Terra: when Corswain relights the Astronomican, the I Legion stands among the loyalists. It is the primarch who is absent, not the Legion. The name of the Lion’s Gate is not connected with Lion El’Jonson — it is an irony of the map, not etymology.

What to remember
- The VIII wages war by terror and withdrawal, the I by a doctrine of annihilation. The styles never meet.
- Sevatar is the key to reading the Night Lords as an army, not a gang.
- The duel of the Lion and Curze ends neither the war nor Curze.
