Black Library Reading Order

Several routes through some fifty books, tied to the events of the map: the spine, the wings, the Siege, the Black Books.

The Spine: From Ullanor to Isstvan V

The minimal spine without which the map does not sing: “Horus Rising” → “False Gods” → “Galaxy in Flames” → “The Flight of the Eisenstein” → “Fulgrim”. Five books, four systems (Ullanor, Davin, Isstvan III, Isstvan V), the Mournival alive and dead, Garro carries the news, Ferrus dies.

Also here, slightly off to the side in time but essential: “The First Heretic” (Monarchia — earlier than the spine in the XVII Legion’s storyline) and “Mechanicum” (Mars in parallel with Isstvan III). If you read only the spine, Lorgar “appears as a villain in the frame”. With “The First Heretic” he is an architect.

Practical advice: do not start with the Siege. Do not start with the primarch novels. Do not start with the anthologies. After “Fulgrim” you have the right to open Black Book II Massacre and check the Urgall Depression against it. When the spine has been read, walk through the same events on the map, 000–006.M31, without the book: if the icons “sing”, Route A has worked. If not, you were reading the plot, not the headquarters, and it is worth adding “The First Heretic”.

Two Wings: Prospero and Ultramar

After the drop site the cycle diverges, and that is normal: that is how a war diverges. The Prospero wing: “A Thousand Sons” + “Prospero Burns” (+ Black Book VII Inferno). The Ultramar wing: “Know No Fear” + “Betrayer” (+ Black Book V Tempest). The Angel wing: “Fear to Tread”. The Khan wing: “Scars” → “The Path of Heaven”. The Secundus wing: “The Unremembered Empire” → “Pharos” → “Ruinstorm”. The Corax wing: “Deliverance Lost”.

There is no need to read all the wings before touching the Siege; read those whose icons you open. If you opened Calth, start with “Know No Fear”, not a “random volume 30”. The anthologies (“Age of Darkness”, “Shattered Legions”) are for the gaps between wings, not for a first pass. The primarch novels are a Legion’s backstory, a low or medium spoiler for the main arc; put them next to the dossiers, not into the spine.

In practice: one wing at a time, and on the map its theatre. Signus and Calth can be mixed in one reading only when both are already “yours” — otherwise the east merges into a single “Ultima” link.

The Siege as a Separate Cycle

“The Solar War” → “The Lost and the Damned” → “The First Wall” → “Saturnine” → “Mortis” → “Warhawk” → “Echoes of Eternity” → “The End and the Death” I–III. These are not “more volumes of the Heresy”. This is a different rhythm: the phases of the Palace, maximum spoilers, the atlas has already placed the icons.

“The Master of Mankind” is better read before the Siege, although by series number it sits in the Heresy: without the Webway the Father “just sits”. “The Buried Dagger” is the bridge from the XIV to the plague. “Titandeath” and “Slaves to Darkness” are the bridge to Beta-Garmon and the court of Horus. Skipping “Saturnine” and “Echoes” breaks Dorn and Sanguinius. Skipping “Warhawk” breaks Khan.

The third volume of “The End and the Death” cannot be read “instead of all the rest”: the cabin without the walls does not work, the walls without the cabin are already labelled in the atlas, and you will get only confirmation. If you want the map without the finale, bypass the event “Death of Sanguinius · the Emperor against Horus” and do not read this subsection any further. The atlas in this window is a table of contents of the phases, not a spoiler shield: the Saturnine Gate still allows you to stop.

Black Books: When the Numbers Argue with the Novel

I Betrayal — Isstvan III. II Massacre — the Isstvan V drop site. III Extermination — what came after the drop site: the Battle of Phall and the invasion of Paramar. IV Conquest and VI Retribution — conquest and vengeance, the gaps in the map. V Tempest — Calth and Ultramar. VII Inferno — Prospero. VIII Malevolence — Signus Prime and the Chondax campaign. IX Crusade — Thramas.

Reading FW in full is for the staff officer. Read it selectively when an atlas article says “estimate disputed” and you want a source for the order of magnitude of the strength figures. The novel almost always wins on character; FW wins on the order of battle. The atlas feeds on both and marks the seams.

Do not use the wikis as a third canon without a footnote: in the atlas the wikis serve as aggregators, not as authors of events. If FW and a novel diverge on a date, the event card already marks the date as disputed. The book route does not “correct” the atlas timeline — it explains why the timeline chose this mark. Keep FW as a second monitor, not as a first novel.

Three Ready-Made Routes

Route A, “as published, along the spine”: volumes 1–5, “The First Heretic”, “A Thousand Sons” and “Prospero Burns”, “Know No Fear” and “Betrayer”, “Fear to Tread”, “Scars”, “The Unremembered Empire”, “The Master of Mankind”, then the bridges to the Siege, and the Siege.

Route B, “by the map”: go through the eras from the major events to the books named in their sources. Route C, “a single Legion”: the dossier → the Legion’s events → the books from the sources of those events. Route C is worse as a first war (you will not see Horus from the XIX), better as a second.

The atlas does not list all the anthologies and audio dramas: they are keys, not a library catalogue. In the Russian edition, titles are given as commonly used Russian translations, with the original in brackets; where a translation is disputed (Fear to Tread), the English title is the reference point. Do not read “by memes”: “Galaxy in Flames” without “Horus Rising” makes Horus a villain already, without the Mournival. The atlas stands alongside precisely so that a meme does not replace the frame of Ullanor.

What to remember

  • The spine is the first five volumes plus “The First Heretic” and “Mechanicum”.
  • After Isstvan V, read the wings according to the icons you open.
  • The Siege is a separate cycle of eight volumes (the last in three parts); “The Master of Mankind” comes before it.
  • Black Books: the order of battle and the numbers, when a novel and an article disagree; III is Phall and Paramar, VIII is Signus and Chondax.
  • Three routes: publication, map, Legion; the first is for a first pass.
How to look in the atlas
  • Open an event and read its “Sources” field: the way into the book starts there.
  • Do not set the slider to 014.M31 if you have not read the spine: the cabin will swallow Davin.
  • For strength figures take the Black Book of the relevant campaign, not a random volume of the series.
  • The “single Legion” route: the dossier in the “Legions” section → the “Legions” filter on the map and in the chronicle → the event cards.

Disputed in the canon

  • The order of publication and the order of events do not coincide: “The Master of Mankind” stands in the main series but is read before the Siege cycle.
  • In the Russian edition, titles are commonly used Russian translations; where a translation is disputed, the English title serves as the anchor.
