Kor Phaeron

Kor Phaeron — First Captain and “Black Cardinal” of the Word Bearers, the foster father and mentor of Lorgar from Colchis. He turned the Legion to Chaos and commanded the treacherous attack on Calth, where he tried in vain to tempt Guilliman with a shard of the Anathame. He escaped from the warp with the help of an athame when his ship was destroyed.

    The Foster Father against the Avenging Son. Kor Phaeron is not a primarch, but on Calth’s orbital platform he fights Guilliman with a shard of the Anathame, trying to turn him to Chaos; the primarch answers by tearing out one of his two hearts. This should be read as the design of the XVII Legion: to kill Ultramar by beheading its mind, not by outarguing it in the field. The poisoned blade that will put Guilliman into stasis for ten thousand years is Fulgrim at Thessala in the Scouring, striking at exactly the same scar on the throat.
