Razing of Monarchia

Place: Khur / Monarchia · Segmentum Pacificus

Fig. 1 · Place on the map

Loyalist victory Monarchia is burned on the Emperor’s orders; the XVII Legion is humbled.

At the Emperor’s command the Ultramarines razed Monarchia to the ground — the “Perfect City” on Khur, raised by the Word Bearers as a shrine to the worship of the Emperor. All one hundred thousand Word Bearers were forced to kneel in the ashes while the Emperor, speaking through Malcador, denounced their false faith as treason against the Imperial Truth. This humiliation festered in Lorgar forever.

Significance

The seed of the XVII Legion’s fall: the humiliation drove Lorgar to the “Pilgrimage” to the dark gods.

Disputed in the canon

  • An event of the M30 era (c. 43 years before Isstvan V), entered as a chronicle record. The approximate “42nd year of the Crusade” is a derived figure and probably mistaken; the reliable anchor is 964.M30. The date is disputed: 962.M30 (Dembski-Bowden) against 964.M30 (Forge World); the atlas’s scale holds 964.M30.
