The Cheraut Incident · Curze assaults Dorn

Place: Cheraut System · Great Crusade frontier

Fig. 1 · Place on the map

Atrocity Curze beats Dorn almost to death, butchers his own guards and escapes from arrest.

After the long and bloody Compliance campaign in the Cheraut system — a rare case of three primarchs fighting side by side — Dorn demanded from Curze an account for the slaughter wrought by the Night Lords and for his grim prophecies of a coming civil war. The quarrel grew into a brutal assault: the Night Lord, gripped by visions of a dark future, beat Rogal Dorn almost to death, and came to himself only when Sigismund burst in and dragged him away. Curze was taken into custody to await the judgement of his brother primarchs, but broke free, leaving fresh bloodied corpses in his wake.

Significance

The first open crack in the brotherhood of the primarchs and a harbinger of the Heresy: Dorn will harbour distrust of Curze, and Curze will be confirmed in his belief that the future is already ordained.

Disputed in the canon

  • A pre-Heresy incident of the late Great Crusade; the exact Imperial year and the segmentum of Cheraut are not fixed in the canon (placed at c. 999.M30 from context — the worsening of Curze’s visions of civil war). Curze was then still regarded as a loyalist.
