The Golden and the Mute

The Custodians and the Sisters of Silence — why the Siege and Prospero cannot be read without them.

Not a Legion and Not an “Astartes Elite”

Legio Custodes is a separate branch, made differently from the primarchs and the Legions: individually created transhumans, the personal guard of the Emperor under Captain-General Constantin Valdor. The Sisters of Silence (the Null-Maidens) are psychic nulls, whose warp-voidness extinguishes psychic power; without them neither Prospero nor the Webway comes together as an operation.

On the map they rarely have a star of their own: they go with the VI to Prospero and sit beneath the Palace. The beginner’s mistake is to look for a “Custodian legion” among the Legions: there are only Astartes numerals there, while the Custodians and the Sisters are described under “Forces and powers”.

Prospero: Why the VI Is Not Enough

Russ brings fury and numbers. The Sisters quench the warp over Tizca. The Custodians carry the mandate of the Father, which the VI alone does not embody.

The Burning is a joint operation, and the card shows it: on the loyalist side of the Burning of Prospero stand the VI plus the Custodians, the Sisters of Silence and the Mechanicum, with Russ, Valdor and Jenetia Krole in command. Read the factions of the sides, not only the Legions. Without the Sisters the XV fights in its own element; with them, in an alien one.

Years in the Hole

The War Within the Webway is their main war, almost invisible on the galactic map. The losses there are monstrous relative to a tiny number: their dossier counts losses at nine tenths of the Custodians. By the Siege the golden reserve is no longer “fresh”.

Next come the Sanction and the Throne: Malcador sits down, the Emperor steps onto the deck of the Vengeful Spirit, and then the other way round — for good. To read the Siege without accounting for this expenditure is to think that the Palace was held only by the VII and IX.

Where to Find Them in the Atlas

The Custodians and the Sisters of Silence are described in the atlas under “Forces and powers”. Events in which they take part: the Burning of Prospero, the War Within the Webway, the Unspoken Sanction, the Siege of Terra.

In the glossary: “Custodians”, “Sisters of Silence”, “Knights-Errant”; the dossier of Valdor is under “Forces and powers”.

The atlas has no numerical force snapshots for them: their bookkeeping is kept in prose in the note on strength, and it cannot be added to the thousands of Astartes. Valdor and Sigismund are two different “first blades” of the Imperium with different oaths; read their dossiers one after the other.

What to remember

  • The Custodians and the Sisters are not on the list of the eighteen Legions.
  • Prospero is a joint operation, not a solo feat of the VI.
  • Their main war is hardly drawn in stars.
How to look in the atlas
  • “Legions” mode → “Forces and powers” tab (not the numerals in the rail).
  • “Burning of Prospero”: look at the factions of the sides, not only the Legions.
  • The article “Webway” — right after this one.
  • Search: Valdor, Malcador, Jenetia Krole; glossary — the ❖ button.

Disputed in the canon

  • The duration of the War Within the Webway is disputed, and with it the span in which Legio Custodes loses nine tenths of its strength: the Lexicanum infobox gives 004–014.M31, while “The Master of Mankind” (A. Dembski-Bowden) gives about five years of active phase. The atlas holds the war as a long process from 005.M31 and dates not its length but its anchor points: the breach, the Sanction, the defeat of Magnus.
