The Pharos: Secundus’s Xenos Beacon

Sotha, the light that cannot be shown to the Father, and why the second Imperium came together at all.

What the Pharos Is, If Not the Astronomican

The Pharos on Sotha is a xenos device that provides a local beacon and an anchor for navigation. In the storm, where the Astronomican cannot be seen, it is the only light the IX Legion and the I Legion can land on. Guilliman uses it as the nerve of Secundus.

The price: a beacon calls not only friends. The Night Lords strike Sotha. The atlas does not draw the caves of the Pharos; it places the system and the event “Battle of Sotha”. Here is the iron reason why three primarchs ended up in one room: not a conspiracy, but navigation.

Why This Cannot Be Shown to the Father

The Emperor is building the Webway so that humanity need not depend on the warp. The Pharos is an alien crutch for the same need. Secundus rests on a thing that contradicts the Father’s project, even if it saves billions.

From this come shame and renunciation. But the order here is not the one that is convenient to retell: Guilliman lays down the crown before the march through the storm, and the breach at Davin is opened by the fleets of an already disbanded Secundus. The renunciation did not “coincide with the return of the light”; it preceded it and made the march possible.

How to Look at Sotha on the Galaxy Map

Sotha is not the capital. Macragge is the capital. The pairing of the two points is Secundus as a machine. First the IX come to the light (008.M31), then the VIII strike the beacon.

The political layer, the proclamation of Imperium Secundus (009.M31), flares on Macragge; the military layer flares on Sotha. Do not merge them. Books: “Pharos” (G. Haley), “The Unremembered Empire” (D. Abnett).

What to remember

  • Secundus gathered around an alien beacon, not around Guilliman’s vanity.
  • Sotha is the nerve, Macragge is the throne. They are different stars.
  • The renunciation comes before the breakthrough of the storm, not after it.
How to look in the atlas
  • “Sotha” and “Macragge” in one window, 008–009.M31.
  • The event “Battle of Sotha”: the sides, with the VIII Legion.
  • The event “Imperium Secundus Proclaimed” (009.M31) is the political layer of the same machine.
  • Then the renunciation → Davin (011.M31): the crown is laid down, and only after that does the crutch cease to be needed.
