The Battle of Tallarn

The Iron Warriors sterilise Tallarn with a virus and get the greatest tank war of the age. Perturabo is looking not for a flag over the desert but for what is hidden beneath it. The IV Legion emerges alive and scorched.

Outcome Inconclusive / Pyrrhic for the traitors: Tallarn did not become a bridgehead, the IV is weakened before the Siege, the loyalists did not win back a living world.

Analysis

Tallarn is often squeezed down to “a lot of tanks in the sand”. The canon of French and Black Book VI is broader. First comes Exterminatus: a world that cannot be left behind as a living rear. Then come years (in a number of summaries the campaign is stretched out; in the atlas the peak is 010.M31) of armoured warfare, in which Astartes are rare and the Excertus machines and the IV’s armoured companies are counted in thousands. Why does Perturabo stay so long? The sources agree that something lies beneath Tallarn that he needs personally (an artefact or data — the wording varies, and the canon says nothing more specific). On the map Tallarn is a side blow relative to the arrow pointing at Terra: the IV Legion spends a resource that the Siege will need as a siege train. That is exactly why, later, Perturabo, already embittered by Iydris and Tallarn, will abandon the walls of the Palace. The loyalists “win” in the sense that Perturabo does not get what he wanted cleanly; the world remains a dead desert for ever.

Order of battle

The IV Legion + armour of the Dark Mechanicum against the loyal armoured formations of Tallarn, Excertus reinforcements and rare Astartes contingents. Titans are present, but tank density dominates, not the god-machines of Beta-Garmon.

Turning points

  1. 010.M31 The Virus and the Desert — Battle of Tallarn

The world is killed as a biosphere. From here only machines and sealed crews do the fighting.

  2. 010.M31 The Great Tank Meat Grinder — Battle of Tallarn

The resources of the IV Legion are burned at a pace that even Perturabo will not endure.

  3. 010.M31 Abandoning the Prize — Battle of Tallarn

What is sought does not come cheaply. The campaign winds down; the sand remains a grave.

Events of the campaign

  1. 010.M31 Battle of Tallarn Loyalist victory

Perturabo’s Iron Warriors dropped out of the warp and with virus bombs turned the Imperial staging world of Tallarn into a poisoned desert, seeking a buried Dark Age artefact — the “Black Oculus”.

Significance

Takes a bite out of Horus’s best siege Legion on the eve of the decisive theatre and cements Perturabo’s grievance.

How to look in the atlas
  • Time slider 10.4…11.2. Tallarn lies OFF TO ONE SIDE of the arrow pointing at Terra — that is the whole point of the campaign for the loyalists.
  • Open the “World statuses” layer: Tallarn remains a dead zone even after the IV Legion has left.
