Imperium Secundus: The Loyalists’ Emergency Heresy
When the beacon goes out, the Imperium multiplies — and frightens itself: the loyalists’ emergency state in the east, 009–011.M31.
Not Usurpation — a Protocol of Blindness
After the birth of the Ruinstorm (007.M31) the east receives no light of the Astronomican. There is no news: whether the Father lives, whether Terra still stands, whether Horus has not already become an emperor of ash. Guilliman holds Ultramar as a working state and does what he was taught: he does not leave people without law. Secundus is law for the case of the centre’s death.
Precise roles matter more than the general word “regent”. Guilliman does not accept the crown and at first tries to persuade the Lion to take the throne; when he refuses, Sanguinius is crowned — under the title Imperator Regis. Guilliman himself remains first counsellor and administrator of the new Imperium, and the Lion enters as Lord Protector. The gesture is meant to close off the charge of usurpation: the “best son” rules, not the bookkeeper of Macragge. The canon of “The Unremembered Empire” does not paint three idiots. It paints three adults who have no channel of communication, one of whom (the Angel) has already seen how he will end.
On the map Secundus is not a single-colour fill of Ultima. It is Macragge, Sotha, the routes of the IX and I, the holes in the Storm. If you paint the whole east as “the second Imperium”, you will exaggerate the power of the triumvirate. They barely hold what the Pharos reaches. The rest is worlds in the dark, where the Heresy proceeds by local order, not by the Regent’s decree.
The Pharos: A Xenos Nerve That Cannot Be Shown to the Father
The lamp on Sotha replaces the beacon of Terra with an empathic machine of Necron origin. Barabas Dantioch, a loyal Iron Warrior, starts up what the Mechanicum would have called heresy on any other day. Without the Pharos, Secundus is a set of isolated chapters of the XIII. With the Pharos — navigation, muster, the possibility of war. And a point of attack: the Night Lords strike Sotha because they understand the switch.
This is a moral stumbling block: the loyalists use xenos technology to survive in a war for the Imperial Truth. The atlas does not play the hypocrite — the event card names the device directly. How much the Emperor knew about the Pharos in advance the canon does not settle; we keep the disputed disputed and claim nothing extra.
A practical conclusion for reading: any loyalist route of the east in the 009–011 window relies either on the Pharos or on a suicidal breakthrough of the storm. The canon gives no third beacon. When the Pharos is wounded, Secundus begins to die even before the official renunciation. Sotha matters for the whole window of Secundus: an extinguished Pharos means not “one more raid by the VIII” but a switched-off brain of eastern navigation.
Curze as an Internal Trial
The Night Haunter inside Macragge is not a prisoner of war in the usual sense. He proves a thesis to the triumvirate: your second Imperium is already rotting, you are already tyrants, I have seen the end. The trial of Curze nearly tears the Lion and Guilliman apart. Sanguinius again turns out to be the glue that costs dearly. The canon uses the primarch of the VIII as an acid, a developer for the “good ones”.
On the map this is not a major battle — it is a political event, more important than yet another landing. Without political events, Secundus turns into “three Legions in Ultramar”. With politics, it is a state that tries a monster and discovers that its procedures cannot withstand a prophet of terror.
Curze does not “conquer” Secundus. He makes it unbearable for its founders, and this is closer to his doctrine than seizing the capital. Thramas brought the Lion; the Pharos brought Curze after him. The geography of the east is cruelly consistent. That is why the trial card is more important than many of the Thramas landings for understanding Secundus: the state breaks on a procedure that it does not know how to apply to a prophet.
Renunciation and Davin as the Way Out
Guilliman dissolves Secundus when proof appears that Terra is alive. The canon supplies a specific and cruel mechanism: the proof becomes the vision of Curze himself — the Callidus assassin sent for him means that the Emperor is alive and giving orders. The prophet of terror with his own hand abolishes the second throne.
The Second Battle of Davin (011.M31) is a hole in the Storm, bitterly rhyming with Horus’s first Davin: the same world, a different function. The Ruinstorm closes the arc. On the map 011.M31 is a change of regime in the east: from “capital” back to “corridor to Sol”. The XIII, IX and I begin a transition that will not in any case reach the cabin in time.
Does this mean that Secundus was a mistake? The canon allows both “yes” (the risk of an eternal schism) and “no” (millions of lives under law instead of darkness). The atlas holds both. The later Imperium will strike the memory out, because a second emperor is an unbearable thought even if he is an Angel. The reader of the map is not obliged to strike it out. A practical gesture: do not leave the Regent at Macragge after 011.M31. The eastern Legions are now a corridor, not a capital; otherwise the Siege once again looks as though Guilliman “did not want to”.
How to View Secundus Without Confusing It with Ultramar
Ultramar is the region of the XIII before, during and after. Secundus is a political regime of ~009–011.M31. Do not count all of Guilliman’s worlds as “the second Imperium” outside this window. Anchor points: the storm, the Pharos, the arrival of the IX, the proclamation (009.M31), Sotha, the trial of Curze (010.M31), the renunciation and Davin (011.M31). Eight points.
Books: “The Unremembered Empire”, “Pharos”, “Angels of Caliban”, “Ruinstorm”. It is useful to compare with Horus: both build an empire on the Father’s absence. The difference is the readiness to disband when the Father is found. By 011 Horus is no longer ready. Guilliman is. After 011.M31 the map is once again unipolar. The price is years that cannot be given back to the walls.
If after this pack Secundus still looks to you like usurpation, remember the absence of news in 008–009.M31, not the morality of 014. They acted in a darkness that the Storm made physical.
What to remember
- Secundus is a protocol of blindness, not Guilliman’s conspiracy against the Father.
- Sanguinius was crowned (Imperator Regis); Guilliman refused the crown, the Lion is Lord Protector.
- The Pharos is the nerve of the regime; Sotha matters more than many western battles.
- Curze breaks Secundus as a trial, and his own vision of the Callidus assassin proves that the Father is alive.
- Ultramar ≠ Secundus: the region outlives the regime.
How to look in the atlas
- Slider 009–011.M31; in the system search open “Macragge” and “Sotha”.
- “Legions” filter on IX and I: the Signus→Macragge and Thramas→Macragge routes will light up by themselves in their own windows of time.
- In the “Event type” section of the rail keep “Politics” switched on — otherwise the proclamation, the trial and the renunciation will vanish.
- The “World statuses” layer over the window of Secundus: you can see that the triumvirate holds not the east but a wedge lit by the Pharos.
Disputed in the canon
- The date of the founding is disputed: Lexicanum gives 009.M31 and Sanguinius’s coronation ~010.M31; “The Unremembered Empire” ties the founding to the arrival of Sanguinius (~008.M31). The atlas marks the date of the proclamation as disputed.
- Formal dissolution: the renunciation falls in late 011.M31, but some sources stretch the final closure to 014.M31.
- How much the Emperor knew about the Pharos in advance the canon does not settle; later texts give only hints.
- The date of the attack on Sotha: ~009.M31 according to the Lexicanum infobox, while the Thramas materials and “Pharos” place it in the last days of 010.M31. This is one attack, not a double count.
