II and XI: How to Read the Striking-Out

Two Legions that are missing. The atlas does not fill the hole with fan theory.

What the Canon Permits Us to Know

Two Legions and two primarchs were erased before the Heresy: names, worlds and guilt were purged from the Imperial archives and chronicles, and the plinths beneath their statues stood empty for a long time — no one spoke of the two absent brothers.

What the canon does show. In the short story “The Last Council” Malcador destroys the statue of one of the lost, while Horus, Alpharius and Jaghatai Khan try to stop him: the Sigillite refuses to listen and strikes Horus psychically at the very moment that he begins to pronounce the name. In “The First Heretic” these two are called “the Forgotten and the Purged”.

Fan theories (Chaos, gene-seed, xenos, merging with other Legions) do not live in the atlas. The dossiers of II and XI read [DATA EXPUNGED]. This is not an unfinished job; it is the shape of the canon.

How the Hole Works on the Map

In the atlas II and XI have no home stars: their rows are marked as expunged, and there is nothing to anchor events to. Do not look.

When you count “half the primarchs”, remember: counting from twenty and from eighteen are different moral arithmetics. The Heresy splits the eighteen that are known. Two were already a lesson that did not save the rest.

The Ethics of an Encyclopaedia

It would be easy to “restore” the names for the sake of completeness. But that would destroy the main idea: canon without inventions. A hole must be visible as a hole. If you open a dossier and see redaction, you have read it correctly.

Compare with Alpharius: there the hole is of a different kind — two in one name, disputed deaths, and in the atlas the allegiance of the XX is directly marked “Traitor (disputed)”. The striking out of II and XI is not a riddle to be solved in this atlas.

What to remember

  • No names — no stars. That is the rule of coverage.
  • Count the schism from eighteen, not from twenty.
  • Theories are not canon; the atlas does not host them.
How to look in the atlas
  • “Legions” mode: the cards of II and XI are under the stamp [EXPUNGED].
  • The Legions section of the rail: their rows are visible but do not toggle as a filter.
  • Do not add them “as if” to the analysis of forces.
