The Webway: The Father’s Real War
Why the Emperor left Ullanor, what Magnus broke, and how this holds the Siege together from within.
Why Abandon the Crusade
The Emperor appoints Horus Warmaster and leaves Ullanor because humanity needs a route without the warp. The aim of the Great Work is to replace warp travel with an Imperial stretch of the Webway and to remove the dependence on both Navigators and astropaths at once. This is not a “secret whim”. It is a wager beside which the Heresy is a hindrance, until Magnus turns it into a wound.
On the map after Ullanor the Father disappears as a field commander. The canon of absence: do not look for his flares in Ultima. He is beneath the Palace. Malcador and Valdor are the visible hands of this invisible front.
The Breach: Salvation as Catastrophe
Magnus cries out about Horus through the warp and tears the project’s protection apart. The warning arrives at the cost of the future: daemons flood the Imperial stretch of the Webway, and the Emperor is chained to the Golden Throne to hold the breach closed for as long as his strength lasts.
The Custodians and the Sisters of Silence fight in the Webway for years around Calastar’s “Impossible City”. The duration is disputed: the Lexicanum infobox stretches the war over 004–014.M31, the text of the same article speaks of five years of active phase, Fandom compilations of a “decade”. The atlas keeps it as a long process, not as a date.
Prospero burns in its wake as the political consequence of a swapped order, but even without the swap the breach had already happened. Two truths: the XV saves the Imperium with information and cripples its infrastructure. The Prospero article holds the extermination. This one holds the hole.
The Fifth Layer of the Siege
While Dorn counts the days of the walls, beneath the Palace a war is under way that must be won before the Throne can be left. In the finale Magnus comes to the same wound — and Vulkan stops him there, at the same time as the defence of the Eternity Gate.
The Unspoken Sanction is the price of one day of freedom: a thousand assembled psykers are burnt so that the Throne can hold the breach without the Emperor and he can go down into the Webway in person. This is the very mechanism by which “getting up” is not a question of drama: without a replacement on the Throne the inner front collapses.
Hence the cruelty of the choice aboard the “Vengeful Spirit” and the seating on the Throne forever. Without this frame the deck reads as a duel of fathers and sons rather than an evacuation from a sinking project.
How to See the Invisible Front
On the galaxy map the Webway is not a polyline. Its traces are events of the “Chronicle” and “Warp” types on Terra: the founding of the project, the breach, the war within, the Sanction, the defeat of Magnus.
Next come the phases of the Siege and the dossiers of the Custodians and the Sisters. Books: Master of Mankind (the main text), Inferno, the end of the Siege. Maximum spoilers.
A practical rule: every time you ask “where is the Emperor in 007?”, the answer is “holding the hole”, not “abandoned his sons”.
What to remember
- Leaving Ullanor was a wager on the Webway, not indifference.
- Magnus’s breach matters more than the burning of Tizca for the fate of Terra.
- The Siege has an inner front without which the finale is incomprehensible.
How to look in the atlas
- The “Event type” rail → “Chronicle” and “Warp”; the “Terra” system: the founding of the project (000) → Magnus’s breach (004) → the War Within the Webway (005.M31).
- Search by name: the Emperor, Malcador, Valdor — the character dossiers.
- Siege mode: the Unspoken Sanction and the defeat of Magnus in the Webway (014.M31).
- The articles “The Golden and the Mute” and “Prospero” are neighbours, not duplicates.
Disputed in the canon
- The duration of the War Within the Webway is disputed: the Lexicanum infobox stretches it over 004–014.M31, while the text of “The Master of Mankind” (A. Dembski-Bowden) speaks of roughly five years of active phase. The atlas holds the war as a long process beginning in 005.M31 and assigns it no end year: the anchor points are dated — the breach, the Sanction, the defeat of Magnus — not the length of the front.
