Analysis
Signus is a model “war without an enemy Legion”. Horus does not set Astartes against Sanguinius: he sets a Bloodthirster against him, and a system already given over to the warp. The aim is twofold: to kill, or to make fallen, the likeliest rival for the Father’s love, and to subtract the IX from Isstvan V. In timing the campaign nearly coincides with the Drop Site — both fall in 006.M31 — and this is no accident of the staff but a parallel operation. The route “Baal → Signus → (later) Macragge” shows that the Angels were not “late”: they were led away. The canon of Fear to Tread / Malevolence: Sanguinius defeats Ka’Bandha at a cost, and the Thirst becomes a Legion-wide event for the first time. The strategic result is paradoxical: a field victory for the loyalists, an operational victory for Horus. That is exactly why Sanguinius ends up on Macragge and becomes the Regent of Secundus.
Order of battle
The IX Legion at almost full muster (the Baal Muster, 005.M31) against the daemonic legions of Khorne and the traps laid by Horus’s agents. By the time of arrival the mortals of Signus are no longer a party. The ship-to-ship fighting is secondary to the planetary warp strike.
Turning points
- The Muster on Baal — The Baal Muster · advance on Signus
Horus gives Sanguinius “a glorious war of his own”. The bait is swallowed.
- Ka’Bandha — The Signus Campaign · Signus Prime
The daemon breaks a Legion and a primarch. The Thirst slips out of control.
- Refusing the Fall — The Signus Campaign · Signus Prime
Sanguinius wins and remains loyal — but Isstvan V is already over without him.
Events of the campaign
- The Baal Muster · advance on Signus Inconclusive
Having received from aboard the Word Bearers’ “Dark Page” Horus’s order to put down a supposed uprising, Sanguinius mustered the main forces of the Blood Angels at his home world of Baal.
- The Signus Campaign · Signus Prime Pyrrhic loyalist victory
Horus lured the Blood Angels into the Signus Cluster in order to destroy them; there a trap of daemonic legions awaited them.
Significance
Subtracts the Blood Angels from the first phase of the war and prepares them for the role of the Regency and, later, the last wall of Terra.
How to look in the atlas
- Time slider 5.45…6.8, and watch the route Baal → Signus: the Angels were not “late” for Isstvan — they were led away.
- The “Investigations” lens → “The Geometry of Isstvan V” → step 5: the Drop Site and Signus run almost back to back — a single operation of Horus’s in two places.
