The Geometry of Isstvan V
Why the second wave worked and what the striking out of three Legions does to the war
On the cover: X Iron Hands
The drop site is not a “big battle”. It is the murder of trust as a military institution. After the drop site (006.M31) the loyalists’ reconnaissance, striking power and staying power are riddled with holes forever.
Step 1 of 5 ·
The first wave: the three who could be burned
Those placed on the drop site are those whose doctrine is to advance, not to wait for confirmation.
The Iron Hands, the Salamanders, the Raven Guard. The Gorgon leads because he always leads. Vulkan leads because he does not abandon his brothers. Corax conducts a reconnaissance that there is nowhere here to conduct. The geometry is simple and deadly: the loyalists dig in within the Urgall Depression, the ring of traitors closes, the second wave comes out on the ridge from the northern edge. The atlas does not draw trenches — it draws the fact that three Legions stand at a single point to which “their own” are about to come.
Event: Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V · System: Isstvan System
How to look in the atlas
- The “Legions” rail: leave X, XVIII and XIX on and switch the rest off. One system, three names — it ought to feel this crowded.
- Side: “Loyalists” — and see how short the column is.
Canon note
- The battlefield is the Urgall Depression: the loyalists hold its southern edge, the second wave comes out on the northern one. The term “Uranzites”, which sometimes surfaces in retellings, is unknown to canon.

Step 2 of 5 ·
The second wave: the four who could not have been suspected in time
IV, VIII, XVII and XX plus the already open traitors. The doctrine of the Crusade has no procedure for “a primarch lies”.
The Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion land as reinforcements. Perturabo knows how to close a ring. Curze knows how to finish a kill. Lorgar has long awaited this day. Alpharius knows how to make sure the news does not get out. Together with the already open XVI, III, XII and XIV that is eight Legions against three in a cauldron where even the orbit belongs to the enemy. Why the second wave was believed: because the alternative is to admit that half the primarchs are in the plot, and there is no language for that. The language will come afterwards, in the Codex and in trauma.
Event: Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V · System: Isstvan System
How to look in the atlas
- Add IV, VIII, XVII, XX to the rail, then XVI, III, XII, XIV. The map will not change the coordinate — the meaning of the same point will.
- Open the dossiers of Perturabo and Ferrus one after the other and compare how each of them speaks of brotherhood.
Canon note
- The second wave consists of four Legions: the Iron Warriors (IV), Night Lords (VIII), Word Bearers (XVII) and Alpha Legion (XX). The version with three Legions, without the Word Bearers, is a common error of retelling; canon (Lexicanum/Fandom) is firm on four, and the Word Bearers are listed among the traitors of the drop site in the atlas’s other sources as well.

Step 3 of 5 ·
The Gorgon as a failure and as fuel
The first death of a primarch in the Heresy is not a statistic. It breaks the X Legion’s will.
Fulgrim and Ferrus are brother-smiths. The Laer blade is already guiding the hand of the Phoenician. The beheading of the Gorgon at Isstvan V makes the war irreversible for the III and the X: after this there is no “we will talk”. Ferrus Manus is the first primarch to die in the Heresy, and his death stands in one frame with two hundred thousand slain Astartes. The duels are set apart in the atlas precisely because the operational map swallows them as an outcome of “Atrocity”.

How to look in the atlas
- From the duel card, go on to the dossiers of Fulgrim and Ferrus.
- Then return to the map: the system is the same. The personal and the staff-level are one frame.

Step 4 of 5 ·
What striking out the three does to the war
The loyalists lose their striking power, their staying power and their reconnaissance. The traitors gain eight years without an equal answer.
The X: splinters and the vengeance of Shadrak Meduson. The XVIII: Vulkan is missing (Curze captured him), the Legion is scattered. The XIX: Corax gathers a handful, goes off into guerrilla war, and then returns to Deliverance, where the attempt to restore the Legion through the Emperor’s genetic gifts will end in catastrophe. The loyalist column loses weight as it did in no field battle. Beta-Garmon and the Siege will be paid for by this frame: there is no one left to cover the approaches.
Event: Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V · System: Isstvan System
How to look in the atlas
- The “Legions” mode: read the Strength lines for X, XVIII and XIX — and beside them the XIII, which in this frame is still intact (it will be subtracted at Calth, 7.1).
- Two different stories of strength in one list.

Step 5 of 5 ·
Signus in the same window
While three Legions burn on Isstvan, the IX is led into a trap so that the Angel does not come to the rescue.
The Signus Campaign is not “one more battle” but the subtraction of Sanguinius from the response to the drop site. Horus knows whom he must not let near Isstvan, and sends the Blood Angels to the cluster, where a daemonic master awaits them. The atlas sets Signus almost back to back with the drop site — both in 006.M31 — so that the eye has no time to “catch its breath”.
Event: The Signus Campaign · Signus Prime · System: Signus Cluster
How to look in the atlas
- Press “Show on the map” — the atlas will settle on t = 6.6 and home in on Signus; the same frame holds the second flash, Isstvan.
- Leave only the IX on — it is not at the drop site. Here absence must be read as an action.
Disputed in the canon
- The culmination is ~005–006.M31 (Lexicanum / Fear to Tread); the Fandom chronicle stretches the campaign to 004–009.M31.

What to remember
- The order of landing matters more than numbers.
- After this the X, XVIII and XIX are no longer Legions but splinters with different fates.
- Fulgrim and Ferrus are the personal price of the same geometry.
