The Angel’s Path

Signus → Secundus → the Eternity Gate: why the IX nevertheless manages to die in time

On the cover: IX Blood Angels

Sanguinius is subtracted from the war three times — and three times he returns not to where it would be most advantageous, but to where his death is needed.

Step 1 of 5 · 006.M31

Signus: a trap instead of the drop site

The IX receives the Warmaster’s order to go to a cluster full of screaming.

Horus cannot risk Sanguinius turning up at Isstvan V. Signus is a precise diversion: the Legion walks into a trap where the Bloodthirster Ka’Bandha awaits it, and Kyriss the Perverse, a Keeper of Secrets of Slaanesh who held the cluster. Horus’s calculation is to expose the flaw in the Blood Angels’ genetic code and turn the Legion to Khorne. The IX comes within a hair of falling entirely. On the map Signus is far from both Terra and Isstvan: geographical isolation is itself the weapon.

Event: The Signus Campaign · Signus Prime · System: Signus Cluster · Duel: Sanguinius against Ka’Bandha

How to look in the atlas
  • Compare the date with the drop site (6.5). One step of the timeline.
  • Leave only the IX on the rail: it is not at Isstvan. Absence is a fact.

Disputed in the canon

  • “The Red Angel” is not a second daemon but an epithet of Sanguinius himself on the brink of the fall; to confuse it with the master of the trap is a frequent error of retellings. The second daemon alongside Ka’Bandha was Kyriss the Perverse, a Keeper of Secrets.

To Macragge through the storm

The Angel does not break through to Terra. He is driven to the one beacon — the Pharos.

The Ruinstorm will not let the IX through to Sol. The Pharos draws them to Macragge. This is how Secundus is born: three primarchs in one room, each certain that he is saving the Imperium. Sanguinius accepts the crown of regent-emperor because only to his figure are the brothers prepared to bow without rebellion. This is not vanity — it is the politics of survival.

Event: Blood Angels Reach Macragge · System: Macragge

How to look in the atlas
  • Trace the IX’s path from Signus (6.6) to Macragge (8.3) by date: two clicks, with almost two years of war for everyone else between them.
  • Then find Sotha and read about the Pharos. Do not read Secundus as “Guilliman wanted a throne”.

Disputed in the canon

  • The sources give no exact date for the IX’s breakthrough to Macragge, which is why the event’s date in the atlas is approximate. The atlas holds to 008.M31 — immediately before the proclamation of Secundus, which the dispute “The Imperium Secundus Window” places at ~009.M31. What is disputed is the year of arrival, not the order: first the beacon of the Pharos, then the crown.

The renunciation and the way through Davin

To get out of the storm the loyalists must go to Davin again — to where it all began.

The Second Battle of Davin is the breach of the Ruinstorm, not a “repetition of the ritual”. The geography closes up: the wound from which the storm grew has to be cut open. Shortly before this, in the same 011.M31, Guilliman renounces Secundus; after the breach the brothers make for Terra by different paths. Davin flares up twice on the map — a rare case in which a single system carries both the prologue and the key to the epilogue of the east.

Event: Second Battle of Davin · breach of the Ruinstorm · System: Davin

How to look in the atlas
  • Find Davin by search and compare its two entries: 4.2 and 11.6.
  • Between them lies the entire growth of the “Corruption” readout. It is the best graph of the Heresy we have.

Disputed in the canon

  • Disputed: the renunciation is dated to late 011.M31, but some sources push the formal dissolution of Secundus out to 014.M31.

The IX still enters the Sol system

Not “in time for victory” — in time for sacrifice.

On the walls the Angel will hold the Eternity Gate; Vulkan at that time is striking Magnus in the Webway, and does not stand beside him at the gate.

Event: The Siege of Terra · System: Terra

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Siege” mode: step through the phases up to the Eternity Gate.
  • Open the “Siege” mode — the map itself does not exaggerate the war; it is the scale of the galactic projection that compresses it into a single point.

Canon note

  • “Passage of the Angel of Death”, with which this episode is easily confused, is not about Sanguinius. It is the punitive raid of the Dark Angels of Lion El’Jonson on Chemos and Barbarus, the I Legion on the loyalist side. The IX enters the Sol system only in the days of the Siege itself (014.M31); the stand at the Eternity Gate is a separate, slightly later frame. And the Angel’s timeliness is explained not by the small numbers of his Legion: canon names as the cause the route that opened after the breach of the Ruinstorm.

The Vengeful Spirit: why the Angel goes first

Sanguinius wounds Horus and perishes. The Emperor enters a gap that is already open.

A duel between the Emperor and Horus is impossible against the Warmaster’s full shield. By the old canon (Index Astartes, Collected Visions) the Angel at the cost of himself left a breach in Horus’s armour, into which the Father then struck. In The End and the Death there is no such breach: Sanguinius dies without piercing the armour, and Horus is finished off by the Emperor — after the way to him has been opened by Ollanius Persson and Loken. To read this as a “beautiful death” is to miss the staff-level meaning. At this moment the whole war is compressed into a single ship in orbit above Terra.

Event: Death of Sanguinius · the Emperor against Horus · System: Terra · Duel: Sanguinius against Horus

How to look in the atlas
  • Open both of Sanguinius’s duels: against Ka’Bandha on Signus and against Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit. Two different prices for one name.
  • Then open Sanguinius’s dossier — his fate is already written in the first lines of the card.
  • The decks and phases of the finale are in the “Siege” mode: the galactic map compresses them into a single point.

Disputed in the canon

  • Retcon: the classic version (Index Astartes, Collected Visions) has Sanguinius leaving a breach in Horus’s armour, with the sacrifice attributed to Ollanius Pius; The End and the Death (Dan Abnett) replaces it: there is no breach, Ollanius Persson and Loken fight their way through to Horus, and the Emperor kills his son himself. The atlas holds the new version as the main one and the old as legend. The End and the Death names another name and another instrument: Ollanius Persson with the anathame, and Loken’s ruse. The legend of Ollanius was in general rewritten from edition to edition: ordinary guardsman → Custodian → Perpetual.

What to remember

  • Signus is an operational abduction, not a “demonstration of Chaos”.
  • Secundus holds the Angel in the east while Dorn holds Sol.
  • The finale aboard the Vengeful Spirit is not a duel of the handsome but a breach in Horus’s armour.
