Beta-Garmon: The Antechamber That Devoured the Titans
The last field battle of the old style before Sol: the cluster was fed from 006 to 013.M31, and it consumed the Collegia Titanica of both sides.
Why Feed the Cluster for Years
Beta-Garmon stands at the throat of Segmentum Solar: the canon directly calls the cluster the gateway to the throneworld. Whoever holds it approaches the Terran system not as a raider but as an armada. Dorn knows this and deliberately feeds the theatre with what will not be at the walls later — Titans, cohorts, the reserves of the Fists and the Angels. One important correction to the scale of the individual: Dorn gives his orders from Terra and does not stand in this inferno himself. In 010 he orders a detachment of Imperial Fists and Salamanders to drive the Emperor’s Children garrison out of Nyrcon; at the climax of 013.M31 the loyalists in the field are commanded by Sanguinius and Jaghatai Khan.
Horus accepts the meat grinder because bypassing it would have cost him the same Siege, only with loyal god-machines at his back. “Titandeath” makes the theatre a theatre of Titans: the Astartes matter, but the count is kept in Legios. On the map the cluster burns for a long time — Nyrcon (010.M31) is already inside the campaign, the climax is 013.M31, and the campaign itself, according to Lexicanum, runs from 006.M31 in two phases.
If you place a single “battle” icon and walk away, you will not see the strategic attrition, years long, that runs in parallel with Molech, Tallarn and the Path of Heaven. Dorn is buying time for Sol. The price is the right to meet Horus in the field once more. After 013.M31 there is no such right. Only walls and spheres.
Death as an Arm of Service
Legio Mortis, Vulpa and Fureans meet the loyalist Solaria, Gryphonicus, Astorum and Ignatum in a concentration that Terra will no longer repeat. According to Lexicanum, Sanguinius led against the capital of the cluster a force of Blood Angels and almost thirty Titan Legions — figures the Heresy will not see in the field again. Few god-machines will remain on the surface of Holy Terra, and John French’s “Mortis” will finish off the survivors with exactly this pair: Legio Mortis rams the Mercury Wall, Legio Ignatum holds it.
Beta-Garmon is the place where the Collegia Titanica ceases to be an instrument of the Great Crusade and becomes the graveyard of the civil war. Knights and the Excertus die in the shadow of Titans’ feet, as the Solar Auxilia did on Isstvan — but here there are thousands of feet. The canon gives no convenient “exact” table of surviving Titans; the atlas does not make things up.
An honest conclusion: after 013.M31 neither side retains a stock of Titans sufficient for a field war of the old crusading kind in Segmentum Solar. That is why the Solar War is spheres and fleet, and the Siege is walls and a daemon — not a second Beta-Garmon around Luna. For a reader of the Legions this is unpleasant: Beta-Garmon is “not about the Astartes”. For a reader of the Siege it is essential: without this scorched Collegia, Dorn could still have met Horus in the field, and not only at the ferrocrete.
What This Does to the Legions
Legion VII loses the right to be the “strategic reserve of the crusade”: the reserve has been burned in the antechamber. Legion IX, already wounded at Signus, pays again and reaches the Eternity Gate smaller than it could have been. Legion XVI loses its veterans of Ullanor, whom Chaos later “replenishes” with something else. Legion IV breaks yet another fortress-cluster and arrives at the Palace weary of other people’s triumphs.
There is a widespread mistake about Legion V, and it must be dispelled outright: the White Scars are not here “on the fringe”. Khan brought the Legion to Beta-Garmon — about a month late because of the warp — and immediately set up a raiding war of his own in the theatre. It was he and Sanguinius, the two of them, who recognised that Dorn’s gamble was spent and that it was time to return to Terra. “The Path of Heaven” is not an alternative to this meat grinder but the road that led into it.
On the map, even so, do not place all the loyalists at Beta-Garmon: the Lion, Guilliman and the Wolves are not here as masters of the campaign — once again the geography of delays and divisions. Comparing it with Isstvan V is useful with the opposite sign: there three Legions were killed within days by a cauldron of treachery; here many forces were killed over years by honest (relatively speaking) attrition. Here Horus lies less and pays more. That is why the victory of 013.M31 is joyless even for him: the road is open, the instrument is erased.
Reading Pack
Time — from 010 (Nyrcon) to 013.M31 in the Beta-Garmon cluster, remembering that the lower bound of the campaign according to Lexicanum is 006.M31. The routes of the loyalist muster and of the traitor muster at Ullanor. Book — “Titandeath”; alongside it “Slaves to Darkness” for the politics of the traitor muster.
Do not begin the Siege without closing this theatre: otherwise it seems that Horus “simply flew in”. The internal slicing of the campaign in the sources is unsteady — how many “battles” exactly lie within the cluster; the atlas holds Nyrcon and the climax as brackets. The worlds of Ollanz are not a substitute for the cluster but a linked strike: the Scouring of the Ollanz Cluster in 012.M31, where Horus intercepted loyalist reinforcements that were heading for Beta-Garmon and refuelling in the Borman system.
If you are looking for the “greatest battle of the Heresy”, the canon often points here for its Titans, and here, too, contests the Siege for its manpower. There is no need to choose. What matters is to see the kind of war: the last one in which the field can still be lost and one can fall back to the star. After that there is nowhere to fall back to: behind Beta-Garmon lies Sol, behind Sol — the cabin.
What to remember
- The cluster is fed for years because it is the gateway to Segmentum Solar, not “just another system”.
- After 013.M31 the field stock of Titans on both sides is effectively spent; the same Mortis–Ignatum pair is finished off by “Mortis” at the Mercury Wall.
- Legions VII and IX arrive at the Siege already burned out in the antechamber; Legion V is present here and does not pass by.
- Dorn sets up and supplies the theatre from Terra; in the field the loyalists are commanded by Sanguinius and Khan.
- Horus’s victory opens the road and breaks the instrument with which that road was walked.
How to look in the atlas
- Slider: 010 → 013.M31 on the “Beta-Garmon Cluster”, without jumping straight to Terra.
- “Legions” filter on VII, IX, IV, XVI, V — the muster routes will light up for the window; then Ullanor as the point of regrouping.
- “Legions” tab → “Forces and powers”: the cards of Legio Mortis, Solaria, Gryphonicus, Astorum, Ignatum are the key to the theatre; the Astartes numerals do not describe it.
- Compare the card “Battle of Nyrcon · Beta-Garmon” (010.M31) with the card for the climax (013.M31): one campaign, two different wars.
Disputed in the canon
- The campaign’s boundaries are disputed: Lexicanum gives 006–013.M31 in two phases (006–011 and 012–013) and the climax of “Titandeath” as ~013.M31; the atlas marks the date of the battle as disputed.
- Nyrcon is the spelling of FW Black Book VI and Lexicanum; “Nycron” in the WH40k Fandom chronicle is the same fortress-city on Beta-Garmon II; the later “Second Battle of Nyrcon” is a separate event of 012–013.M31.
- The canon gives no exact table of surviving Titan Legions; the conclusion that the stock has been exhausted follows from the descriptions, not from a figure.
