The First Investigation

How to use this atlas at all — through a single storyline, not a lecture

On the cover: XVI Sons of Horus

An encyclopaedia lies if you read it from the “interesting stars”. First the question, then the time, then the corridor, then the event itself. Six frames — from Ullanor through Davin, Isstvan III and the Isstvan V drop site to Calth (000–007.M31) — make up the skeleton of the whole war.

Step 1 of 6 · 000.M31

First the question, then the map

Ullanor is a point of reference, not the “start of the plot”.

At Ullanor the Emperor proclaims Horus Warmaster and returns to Terra, to the Webway project. Read the map as a poster and this is a golden parade. Read it as a staff diagram and it is the moment when the centre of gravity of power slides from Terra onto a single fleet. Every later betrayal exploits that gap: the Father is busy with another project, and the son has been given the legitimacy to command his brothers. Do not read “Horus was bad from birth”: in 000.M31 he is still the Imperium’s finest instrument.

Event: Ullanor Triumph · System: Ullanor

How to look in the atlas
  • Side: “All”, with the “Region names” layer switched on — Ullanor lies in Segmentum Ultima.
  • The “Show the state of the Galaxy” button shows the reading right in the step, and it follows t: note “Corruption 0%”. Five steps on, the percentage begins to creep up — not “because it looks good”, but because Davin, Isstvan and Calth feed the corruption formula.

Disputed in the canon

  • The year of the Triumph is disputed: some sources place it at ~000.M30, while Lexicanum and the Fandom chronicle give 000.M31 — and that is the date the atlas has adopted.

The leap to Davin: not an animation but a cause

Between Ullanor (000.M31) and Davin (004.M31) the galaxy is still loyal. The fall is a point, not a gradient.

Remarkably few events lie between the Triumph and the wound of the anathame. This matters methodologically. The Heresy did not “build up for ten years on every front” — it flared up in a single body and only then made use of lodges that were already in place. Scroll through those four years as one continuous strip and the eye grows used to the motion and takes Davin for “just another frame”; step to it directly and the ritual feels like a rupture.

Event: Battle of Davin’s Moon · System: Davin

How to look in the atlas
  • Open the card for the event “Battle of Davin’s Moon”: both the “loyalists” and the “traitors” here are almost entirely the same Sons of Horus; on the traitors’ side stand Erebus and Eugan Temba, the governor of Davin.
  • The outcome is marked “Atrocity” — it refers to the ritual and the corruption, not to a victory as the general staff would count it.
  • Move the time by hand, without playback: straight from 000.M31 to 004.M31.

Disputed in the canon

  • Disputed: Lexicanum and Fandom give 004.M31, Warhammer Community gives “~003.M31”, and the novel False Gods places the corruption immediately before Isstvan III (005.M31). The wound was inflicted on Davin’s moon; the corruption (Delphos) took place on the planet itself.

Isstvan III: the purge of one’s own Legion

The first blood of the Heresy is shed not against the Imperium but against one’s own.

At Isstvan III Horus, Angron, Mortarion and Fulgrim land the loyal companies of their own Legions and burn them with virus bombs. The line-up of the sides here is a trap for the newcomer: the “loyalists” are not Legions VII and XIII but Loken, Tarvitz, Torgaddon and Garro within those same Legions XVI, III, XII and XIV. The very same XVI Legion stands in both columns. That is a civil war, not “reds against blues”.

Event: Isstvan III Atrocity · System: Isstvan System

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Legions” rail: leave XVI, XII, XIV and III on and switch the rest off. Look at the one system — it is already a dead zone (the “World statuses” layer).
  • Then use search to find “Flight of the Eisenstein” — the one corridor by which the news reaches Terra.

Disputed in the canon

  • The virus bombardment is 005.M31; the ground fighting stretched into 006.M31 (Fandom gives “005–006.M31”).

The drop site: the geometry of trust

Isstvan V kills not by numbers but by the order of landing.

The first wave is the X, XVIII and XIX. The second, the “reinforcement”, is the IV, VIII, XVII and XX: the Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Word Bearers and Alpha Legion. Look only at those numbers and the drop site in 006.M31 is a cauldron, not a “battle of two sides”. Three Legions are struck from the war as strategic quantities. The second wave was believed because the doctrine of the Great Crusade made no provision for a primarch betraying a primarch.

Event: Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V · System: Isstvan System

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Legions” rail: X, XVIII, XIX — then add IV, VIII, XVII, XX. The coordinates on the map will not change; the meaning of the same point will.
  • The “Legions” mode: compare the Strength lines of the XIX and XIII — the Raven Guard are left with wreckage out of tens of thousands, while in this frame the XIII is still entirely intact.

Calth: a point plus a corridor

A single star lies. Calth without the Shadow Crusade is a victory for Guilliman that never happened.

Look at Calth alone and the Word Bearers “lost”: Guilliman is alive, the poisoned Veridia strikes at the XIII, but the Legion is not destroyed. Note the command: the strike is led by Kor Phaeron and Erebus, Lorgar himself is present in person, and after Calth he leaves with Angron on the Shadow Crusade. Armatura and Nuceria show that the XVII won the war in the east even while losing the orbit. The Ruinstorm subtracts Ultramar from the Siege. This is the atlas’s main exercise: never read a famous name without its corridor.

Event: Battle of Calth · System: Calth

How to look in the atlas
  • With the “Territories” layer switched on: the Dark Empire grows more slowly than the corruption — political control always lags behind.
  • Do not leave Calth at once: compare the cards for Calth (7.1), Armatura (7.4) and Nuceria (8.2) — this is one campaign, not three battles.

Now choose your own investigation

The atlas is a strategium table. From here on it needs your questions, not ours.

The other investigations — the fall of Horus, the geometry of Isstvan V, how the East was subtracted, the Angel’s path — are built in the same way: a date, a system, a thesis, “how to look”. A step can be interrupted: look into the dossier of a system or a primarch and return to the same date. The cheapest investigation of your own is to ask which Legions are missing from Terra in 014.M31. That too is a question — and it is the map that answers it, not the text.

System: Terra

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Investigations” lens → “The Angel’s Path” → step 4: t = 14, “Siege” mode — the same list of Legions at the walls, but now as the answer to your question.
  • Or put the question through search: type the name of a system and see in which window of time it burns at all.

What to remember

  • A question matters more than a casual glance: “who holds the east in 007.M31?” gives a different map from “where does it turn a pretty red?”
  • Five anchor frames — Ullanor, Davin, Isstvan III, the Isstvan V drop site, Calth — hold up the whole chronology.
  • A famous name without its corridor reads the wrong way round: Calth without the Shadow Crusade looks like a victory for Guilliman.
