Atrocity The Death Guard become the first Plague Marines of Nurgle.

On the road to Terra the Death Guard fleet became stranded in a dead calm of the warp, where the “Destroyer Plague” — the future Blight of Nurgle — swept through the ships. First Captain Calas Typhon, a secret servant of the Lord of Decay, doomed the Legion to this trap. In despair Mortarion gave the souls of his sons to Nurgle in exchange for relief from torment — and the Death Guard arose as the first Plague Marines, bloated and imperishable.

Significance

Turns the XIV Legion into plague servants of Nurgle who will carry pestilence to the walls of Terra.

Disputed in the canon

  • The Death Guard became stranded in the warp on the approach to Terra; sources place this in the late Heresy (c. 013–014.M31).
