Death of Malcador the Sigillite

Place: Terra · Segmentum Solar

Fig. 1 · Place on the map

Pyrrhic loyalist victory Malcador lets go of the Throne and dies; the Emperor names him “Malcador the Hero”.

While the Emperor fought Horus on the “Vengeful Spirit”, the Golden Throne was held by Malcador. The Sigillite’s body had long since turned to dust, and the machine was fuelled by his will alone, keeping the daemons from passing through the webway breach into the Imperial Palace. When the battered Emperor was carried into the throne room and set upon the Throne, Malcador let go of his burden — and his dust was scattered over the stone. He passed his last spark of strength to the Emperor, so that he might awaken and give his last orders; for this sacrifice the Emperor named his friend Malcador the Hero.

Significance

The Regent of Terra departs — the man by whose hand the Imperium was held through all the years of the Heresy; the Golden Throne passes to the Emperor forever.

Canon note

  • “The End and the Death” (Abnett, Siege of Terra 8): Malcador occupied the Golden Throne when the Emperor teleported to the “Vengeful Spirit” and held the webway breach alone. His body by that hour had turned to dust — the machine was fuelled by will. He died immediately after the wounded Emperor was set on the Throne — hence in the chronicle his death stands between the Interment of the Emperor on the Golden Throne and the Murder of Loken by Erebus.
