How the East Was Subtracted

Calth, the Ruinstorm, the Shadow Crusade: the operation that stole the Siege from Guilliman

On the cover: XIII Ultramarines

The aim of the XVII in the east is not to kill Guilliman but to switch off half the galaxy. A killed star matters more than a killed primarch.

Step 1 of 6 · 007.M31

The muster that never was

The XIII expect a joint campaign with the XVII. This is the same type of trust as at Isstvan V.

The operation at Calth is commanded by Kor Phaeron and Erebus; Lorgar himself is present in person (in orbit, aboard the Fidelitas Lex), after which he leaves with Angron on the Shadow Crusade.

Event: Battle of Calth · System: Calth

How to look in the atlas
  • Compare the card for Calth with the card for Isstvan V: the same “we are your own” trick, a different theatre, a different aim — a star, and not only a Legion.
  • The “Legions” rail: XIII and XVII, switch the rest off.

Canon note

  • Lorgar was at Calth in person — Know No Fear (Dan Abnett): the primarch is in the system, aboard the Fidelitas Lex, speaking with Guilliman. The tactical conduct of the strike is Kor Phaeron’s and Erebus’s; this is not command from afar. After Calth Lorgar leads the Shadow Crusade with Angron (Betrayer).

Step 2 of 6 · 007.M31

Why kill a star

The altar is Calth, not the star. The storm matters more than Calth.

The Ruinstorm is born here and now: Erebus performs a ritual at Calth, sacrificing millions of souls; the poisoned Veridia is a weapon against the XIII, not a victim of the storm. Beyond this point the storm is not “born anew” but ripens — the Shadow Crusade of Lorgar and Angron through Ultramar feeds it with blood and devastation. The astropathic network of the east burns out. Loyalist ships can neither assemble nor warn Terra. The formula of this step: a point plus a corridor.

Event: Birth of the Ruinstorm · System: Calth

How to look in the atlas
  • Move t from 7.0 to 8.0: the “Show the state of the Galaxy” button shows “Ruinstorm” right in the step, and the reading follows t — the percentage climbs.
  • Next to it is “Corruption”. Terra is still holding; the east is not.

Canon note

  • The storm is born at Calth before Armatura and Nuceria happen: to read them as the geography that engendered the storm is a chronological error — the two battles merely feed the storm. Nuceria, moreover, is not a world of Ultramar but the homeworld of the World Eaters. Sources differ on whether the “creator” is Lorgar (the architect) or Erebus, who performed the ritual at Calth — the atlas treats the two roles as compatible.

Step 3 of 6 · 007.M31

Armatura: the body of Ultramar

While Calth is the mask of the “muster”, Armatura is the meat grinder of the XIII’s reserves.

Armatura is the barracks world of Ultramar, where replacements for the XIII Legion were forged. Angron and Lorgar destroy what Guilliman would have used to make good his losses. Look only at Calth and you cannot see that the Legion is being struck in depth, not at a symbol. The Shadow Crusade reads only as a chain.

Event: Battle of Armatura · System: Armatura

How to look in the atlas
  • Do not reset the time. Hop Calth → Armatura → Nuceria: this is one campaign.
  • The “World statuses” layer will show Ultramar changing colour not at one point but in a band.

Disputed in the canon

  • The sources give no exact year for Armatura: Betrayer (Aaron Dembski-Bowden) ties the devastation of the barracks world to the course of the Shadow Crusade but does not mark it with a separate date, which is why the event’s date in the atlas is approximate. The atlas holds to 007.M31 by its position between Calth and Nuceria: here the order is more reliable than the year.

Step 4 of 6 · 008.M31

Nuceria: the ascension of Angron

Angron’s personal hatred of his native pit coincides with Lorgar’s ritual need.

Nuceria is the world that broke Angron. Guilliman catches up with the Shadow Crusade here. Lorgar raises his brother into a daemon primarch — and the XII becomes still less manageable as an army and still more useful as a weapon of the warp. For the map this is the end of the eastern corridor as a “front” and the beginning of the storm as a wall.

Event: Battle of Nuceria · ascension of Angron · System: Nuceria

How to look in the atlas
  • Open the dossier of Angron, then that of Lorgar: two motives for a single arrow — vengeance and ritual.
  • Then return to the “Shadow Crusade” event and read it as the frame for all three points.

Disputed in the canon

  • The year of Nuceria is disputed: the Fandom chronicle assigns the battle and Angron’s ascension to 008.M31 as the late phase of the Shadow Crusade, whereas Betrayer (Aaron Dembski-Bowden) gives only the sequence within the campaign, with no year. The atlas holds to 008.M31 and dates the step’s position in the chain, not the rite itself.

Step 5 of 6 · 009.M31

Secundus: the loyalists’ emergency heresy

Guilliman, Sanguinius and the Lion build a second Imperium because they think the first is dead.

This is not usurpation. This is a protocol of blindness: the Astronomican cannot be seen, the Father is presumed dead, humanity must be saved. The Pharos beacon on Sotha provides local navigation — and is at the same time a xenos artefact that cannot be shown to the Father. The roles are distributed thus: Sanguinius is Imperator Regis, regent-emperor; Guilliman is Lord Warden, head of civil administration; the Lion is Lord Protector, head of the military forces. Three loyal names in the “wrong” capital.

Event: Imperium Secundus Proclaimed · System: Macragge

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Event type” rail: “Politics”. Find Secundus on Macragge — it flares up with politics, not with battle.
  • Then use search to find Sotha: the beacon and the capital are different points of one construction.

Disputed in the canon

  • The regent-emperor (Imperator Regis) under Secundus is Sanguinius, not Guilliman — the latter bears the title of Lord Warden, head of civil administration. It is easy to confuse the two titles, but according to Lexicanum/Fandom the crown rests unambiguously on the Angel. The date is disputed: Lexicanum places the founding in 009.M31 and Sanguinius’s coronation at ~010.M31; the BL novel The Unremembered Empire places the founding at the arrival of Sanguinius (~008.M31).

The price: Guilliman is not on Terra

The East was subtracted successfully. The XIII arrives at a finale that has already happened.

The jump forward, to the end of the Siege in 014.M31, is methodological, not a spoiler for the sake of cruelty. The investigation “how the East was subtracted” ends with an absence. Guilliman is late. Sanguinius has time to die. Dorn holds the walls without half his brothers. If you do not make this jump, Calth will remain “a victory for the Ultramarines in the caves”.

Event: Guilliman Arrives Too Late · System: Terra

How to look in the atlas
  • After this step go back to 7.1 and look at Calth once more. It should read differently.
  • That is the criterion that the investigation has worked.

What to remember

  • Calth without the Shadow Crusade reads the wrong way round.
  • The Ruinstorm is a weapon of strategic blindness, not a “weather effect”.
  • Secundus is a consequence of this blindness, not a usurpation.
