Who Did Not Come to the Walls
The Lion, Guilliman, Corax, Russ: a map of lateness, not a map of cowardice
On the cover: I Dark Angels
The Siege of Terra is won and lost by the absent. The atlas deliberately does not “pull” every loyalist up to Sol — but neither does it strike out those who did arrive: Vulkan did not stand on the walls — he decided the outcome beneath them, in the Webway, and ten thousand of Corswain’s Dark Angels fought for the Astronomican. Absence is a figure, not a gap in the data.
Step 1 of 6 ·
Who is at the walls in 014
Three on the walls and one beneath them: Dorn, Sanguinius, Khan — and Vulkan in the Webway beneath the Palace. Beyond them: Legions in fragments, the Custodians, the Sisters of Silence, the Imperial Army and the Titan Legions.
An inventory of presence is needed before an inventory of absence. By the order of battle of the Siege, the walls are held by the VII, IX, V and a contingent of the VI; the XVIII is present in the person of Vulkan, and a landing of the I Legion under Corswain (10,000 warriors) retakes the Astronomican during the Siege so that Guilliman’s fleet could find its way at all. Of the nine loyal primarchs (the Gorgon was killed at Isstvan V back in 006) four are on Sol. Remember the rest: from here each is examined separately, and not one has been “forgotten by the author”.
Event: The Siege of Terra · System: Terra
How to look in the atlas
- The “Siege” mode, slider at 14.00, the “Loyalists” rail — read the order of battle in the card.
- The “Special forces” chips in the card open the dossiers of the factions: the Custodians, the Sisters of Silence, the Titan Legions.
- Check 14.48 in the “Chronicle” — Corswain and the Astronomican. This is the I Legion at Terra, albeit without its primarch.
Canon note
- Vulkan was on Terra: in the Webway beneath the Palace he overcomes Magnus, then helps Dorn seat the Emperor on the Golden Throne, and Guilliman finds him among the surviving primarchs. Lexicanum (Siege of Terra, Vulkan): Vulkan is sent into the Webway to kill Magnus and stops him at the very Throne. The sources do not confirm fragments of the X and XIX at the walls.

Step 2 of 6 ·
The Lion: Thramas, then Caliban
The I Legion is tied down by the war with the VIII on the Eastern Fringe — which is precisely why it was led there. Then its own home betrays it.
The Thramas Crusade is not “the Lion out for a stroll”. Horus sends Curze to the Eastern Fringe precisely in order to bleed the Dark Angels and keep the Lion from reaching Terra. The plan worked: almost three years of terror and retreats. After that the Lion is held back by the Ruinstorm: he is Lord Protector of the Imperium Secundus, and once the storm is breached at Davin he leads the Legion towards Sol by a roundabout path of vengeance. In 014 the primarch is not at the walls because he reaches Terra only after the final duel — although a separate contingent of the I under Corswain fights on Terra. Caliban’s treachery will catch up with the Lion later, after the Siege (step 6).
Event: Thramas Crusade · System: Thramas Sector
How to look in the atlas
- Slider at 7.9, “Map” — the Thramas sector on the Eastern Fringe; switch on the “Region names” layer.
- Jump to 15.3 — the destruction of Caliban. Two points for the I Legion, neither of them Terra.
- “Search” → “Corswain”: the one exception to this rule.

Step 3 of 6 ·
Guilliman: the storm and Secundus
The largest Legion is shut in by the Ruinstorm — and builds a second Imperium instead of marching on Sol.
The Ultramarines are the most numerous Legion of the Heresy, on the order of 250,000 warriors. They are not at the Lion’s Gate. Cut off by the Ruinstorm and without word of the Emperor, Guilliman founds Imperium Secundus with Sanguinius as regent and the Lion as protector. The conclusion for the Siege is dry: Dorn builds the defence without a quarter of a million Ultramarines. And when Guilliman’s fleet does at last incinerate the traitor armada in orbit, the Emperor is already on the Throne: the interment on the Golden Throne precedes Guilliman’s arrival.
Event: Imperium Secundus Proclaimed · System: Macragge
How to look in the atlas
- “Chronicle”: go from 9 to 14.62. Between those marks lies the whole price of distance.
- Compare two cards: “Emperor Interred on the Golden Throne” and “Guilliman Arrives Too Late”. A difference of two hundredths of the scale is what “too late” means.
- Strength against presence: the size of the Legion is in the dossier of the XIII, the order of battle in the siege card.
Canon note
- The strength of the XIII (~250,000) is from Lexicanum/Fandom (Space Marine Legions), the largest Legion at the start of the Heresy.

Step 4 of 6 ·
Russ: the Wolf Campaign, Trisolian, Yarant
The VI Legion sets out to kill Horus in person — and after the miss becomes the prey.
After Prospero Russ does not become a free reserve: first the Alpha Legion’s ambush in the Alaxxes Nebula, then the Wolf Campaign. At Trisolian the Wolves strike the Warmaster’s escort fleet, Russ wounds Horus with the Spear of Russ aboard the Vengeful Spirit — and the Wolves are thrown back, while Horus, drained by the wound, sends Abaddon in pursuit. In the same 012.M31, at Yarant, the scattered Wolves are pressed almost to annihilation, and it is Corax with the Raven Guard who saves them. This is the choice of a hunter, not of a coward — but after it the VI is no longer an army for the walls.
Event: Battle of Trisolian · System: Fenris · Duel: Leman Russ against Horus
How to look in the atlas
- “Chronicle” for the VI after 4.6: Alaxxes (7.3) → Trisolian (12.1) → Yarant (12.15).
- The duel card “Russ against Horus” — the only occasion on which the Warmaster is wounded before Terra.
- Compare with Dorn’s dossier: two different understandings of “serving the Father”.

Step 5 of 6 ·
Corax: the fragments and the war in the rear
The XIX breaks itself at Deliverance, and then deliberately chooses guerrilla war in Horus’s rear instead of a march on Terra.
Corax tries to restore the Legion with the primarch’s gene-technology, but embedded Alpha Legion operatives poison the material — instead of a Legion, deformed mutant “raptors” are born. Corax then makes a choice that matters more in the atlas than the sabotage itself: he stays in the Warmaster’s rear. The Raven Guard take no part in the Siege of Terra at all; instead they pull the Space Wolves out of the trap at Yarant. By the time Guilliman arrives, most of the Imperium does not even know whether Corax is alive.
Event: Deliverance Lost · System: Deliverance / Kiavahr
How to look in the atlas
- The XIX dossier: the Fate line and the strength after Isstvan V.
- The card “Battle of Yarant” (12.15) — there the XIX and the VI stand in one column. That is where the Legion went instead of Terra.
- Do not look for XIX flashes at Terra in 014 — there are none, and this is not a gap in the data.
Canon note
- The Raven Guard did not take part in the Siege of Terra: Corax deliberately waged war in the rear and came to the Wolves’ rescue at Yarant (Fandom/Lexicanum: Corvus Corax, Battle of Yarant). Vulkan, unlike Corax, was on Terra (see step 1).

Step 6 of 6 ·
Caliban as the epilogue of absence
The I Legion ends the Heresy at war with itself. The walls had already been held without it.
The destruction of Caliban comes after the Siege, but it is the price of the same absence. Luther, Astelan, Zahariel, the Lion’s orbital strike and the splitting of the Legion in two. The Lion vanishes for ten thousand years. To read the Siege without this frame is to think that the I “simply did not make it in time”: it did make it — but to a different war.
Event: Destruction of Caliban · System: Caliban
How to look in the atlas
- “Chronicle” at 15.3, the Caliban card: both columns are marked I — the Legion is in both.
- The Lion’s dossier: the Fate line.
- The investigation is closed if you no longer feel like “pulling” the Lion up to the Lion’s Gate with a brush.
Disputed in the canon
- The rebels of Caliban are Luther, Astelan and Zahariel. The date is disputed: Lexicanum places the destruction of Caliban in the Great Scouring, ~015.M31; the exact year is not fixed.

What to remember
- The geography of the Heresy is the geography of lateness.
- Every absentee is busy with a canonical task, not a “coverage bug”.
- Dorn holds the walls with those who are there, not with those one would have liked.
- The list of the absent is shorter than it seems: Vulkan is on Terra, beneath the walls, in the Webway; a contingent of the I Legion is at the walls.
