Five Layers of the Siege

The Solar War, the walls, the Titans, the Webway, the deck of the Vengeful Spirit

On the cover: III Emperor’s Children

“The Battle for the Palace” is a harmful metonymy. The Siege is five wars within a single date, 014.M31, and in four of them the Palace is not even the main stage.

Step 1 of 5 · 013.M31

The Solar War

Pluto, Uranus, Luna. The Palace is not yet under bombardment, and the war is already on.

The Siege begins earlier than the “Siege of Terra” itself: the traitor armada enters the Sol system, Perturabo strikes Pluto and Uranus at the same time, Luna falls, and only then does the orbital bombardment of Terra begin. If you look at Terra alone, you lose the entire sphere that the fleet pays for so that the walls make any sense at all.

Event: The Solar War · System: Pluto

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Siege” mode: the phases read in order, and the galactic map gets in the way here — on it Sol is a single point.
  • “Chronicle” from 13.9 to 14.12 — six cards before the first bomb on Terra.

Disputed in the canon

  • The campaign as a whole is dated 010–014.M31 (the Lexicanum infobox); the final phase is 013–014.M31, and it is the one the atlas places at 013.M31.

The walls: the Lion’s Gate and Saturnine

Spaceports matter more than towers. Whoever holds the port feeds the siege.

The fall of the Lion’s Gate spaceport is logistics, not symbolism: the most heavily fortified port went to the traitors, Mortarion made it his headquarters, and four key points came under threat — the Colossi Gate, the Eternity Wall spaceport, the Saturnine Gate and the Gorgon Bastion. Saturnine is Dorn’s trap: Abaddon led the Justaerin into a gap that had been spotted, Fulgrim threw about a hundred thousand of the Emperor’s Children into the assault, but the ambushes of Loken and Garro cut down the Mournival. And the port will be recovered after all: later Khan retakes the Lion’s Gate and decapitates Mortarion, so that Guilliman’s reinforcements can land.

Event: Fall of the Lion’s Gate Spaceport · System: Terra

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Siege” mode, phases 14.286 → 14.404: page through the ports, not the towers — like a building plan instead of a theatre.
  • Three cards of a single logistics: 14.358 the fall, 14.39 Saturnine, 14.574 the return of the port.

Titandeath at the Walls

Beta-Garmon did not end — it moved to the Mercury-Exultant kill-zone.

Mercury-Exultant is a no man’s land a hundred and fifty kilometres wide in front of the Exultant Wall, which joins the Inner and the Outer Palace. Legio Mortis first drove forward Titans raised by sorcery from among those destroyed at Beta-Garmon, and when Legio Ignatum had worn itself out on the dead, it struck with its main force and destroyed its old enemy. Without this frame the “walls” look like a minor infantry matter.

Event: Mortis · the Titandeath of Terra · System: Terra

How to look in the atlas
  • The “Special forces” chips in the card: Legio Ignatum and Legio Solaria against Legio Mortis.
  • Keep the Beta-Garmon card (13.2) beside it — this is one Titandeath in two theatres.

Canon note

  • Mercury-Exultant is the kill-zone in front of the Exultant Wall where Ignatum and Mortis fought (Lexicanum: Legio Ignatum, Magnificum Incendius, Siege of Terra).

The Webway beneath the Palace

Magnus strikes from within the wound that he himself opened in 004.M31 — and Vulkan stops him.

The fifth layer, invisible from the surface. The Custodians, the Sisters of Silence and the loyalist Mechanicum held the breach for almost ten years; when the Warp Titans crushed the walls of Calastar, the Unspoken Sanction was carried out — about a thousand psykers were sacrificed to the Golden Throne to seal the breach and thereby bind the Emperor to the Throne even before the last duel. In the finale Magnus comes to finish what he began and reaches the Throne itself — there Vulkan meets him and overcomes him, and together with the driving out of Angron at the Eternity Gate this breaks the traitors’ onslaught.

Event: Magnus Defeated in the Webway · System: Terra

How to look in the atlas
  • Two cards of a single hour: 14.587 the Webway and 14.588 the Eternity Gate. Read both.
  • The dossiers of Malcador and Valdor; the event at 14.06, “The Unspoken Sanction”, explains the price.
  • Here too is the answer to a question from the investigation of the absent: Vulkan was on Terra — not on the walls but beneath them, in the Webway.

The Deck

The war ends not with the taking of the Throne but with a duel on the Warmaster’s ship.

Horus lowers the shields of the Vengeful Spirit, luring the Emperor. The teleport boarding goes in four parties: the Emperor, Sanguinius, Dorn and the Custodians. Sanguinius is the first to reach Horus — and perishes, refusing to betray the Father; this is how the Black Rage is born. Dorn follows and is late not for the ship but for his brother. Then comes a duel across matter and the immaterium, a warp-force shed at the last instant, and Horus’s incinerated soul at the price of the Emperor’s mortal wounds. Several events on a single date are not a duplicate; they are layers of one hour.

Event: Boarding of the Vengeful Spirit · System: Terra · Duel: The Emperor against Horus

How to look in the atlas
  • “Chronicle” at 14.591–14.60: the boarding, the death of Sanguinius and the duel, the interment on the Throne. Do not pick just one card.
  • Two duel cards on a single event: “Sanguinius against Horus” and “The Emperor against Horus”.
  • Beyond lies 15.0 — the Great Scouring, already a different world.

Canon note

  • Dorn enters the boarding party aboard the Vengeful Spirit and is named among the participants in the death of Sanguinius and in the duel of the Emperor with Horus: he is late for Sanguinius, not for the ship.

What to remember

  • First Sol, then the walls, with the Webway in parallel.
  • Dorn wins days and loses hours.
  • The finale is a boarding action, not a mob storming the Throne.
